I spent a chunk of time yesterday observing one of my sister’s cats.
I watched Seamus as he stretched and relaxed in the sun. After a little nap, he got up, jumped to the couch and made the rounds among several other visitors. Everyone was happy to see him and freely offered ear scratches and back rubs. Eventually, he wandered over to one of his house mates for a friendly round of kitty-boxing. Then, exhausted, he returned to his sunbeam and promptly feel asleep again.

Today, I woke up beside my favorite person. We snuggled under the covers for a while, took a shower, ate a late breakfast, and lay on the couch. I delivered a back rub using a wonderful lotion picked up at the local farmer’s market. Then, we took a nap in a sunbeam. When we woke up again, we had a simple, homemade lunch. Then, it was my turn for a backrub. We spent the rest of the afternoon laying together and talking.
Tomorrow I return to work. This week, I fall into the usual routine and forget how simple life can be; I hope I remember Seamus’ lesson. How often do we stumble through life oblivious to the wonderful treats that are waiting to be discovered all around us? The world is full of wonderful little joys that are inexhaustible, free for the taking and waiting to be discovered.
